Review: Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone

You may not even like Samsung products , but it is undeniable that the company’s mobile phones remain among the most anticipated models at every launch . For 2015, in addition to the Galaxy S6 , the company decided to make available among its line tops the Galaxy S6 Edge, a device that has practically the same configurations of the simplest model, but which brings a screen with curved edges as a differential.

In addition to finishing with premium materials, the company’s new smartphone bet on exclusive features and promise to make everyday life easier for consumers. The price has unfortunately followed the improvements, and the Galaxy S6 Edge comes on the market in two versions, with official prices ranging from $ 3,799 to $ 4,299.

Is it worth it to spend that much to have a smartphone like it in your pocket? The Info Digital tested more this news and details for you now all about the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. In this review, we used two models of Galaxy S6 Edge: the blue version was loaned by Samsung , while the gold version was provided by the store Cissa Magazine.

Just look at the Galaxy S6 Edge to realize that design is the main differential of the handset. The novelty is on the curved edges, both on the left and right sides. This feature lets you use some special functions on either side.

Samsung Galaxy S6 EDGE

The finish of the handset is exactly the same as the Galaxy S6 , with metal on the sides and rear glass cover, with Gorilla Glass 4 protection. It is not removable and there is also no micro SD card slot. Curved edges, however, undermine ergonomics. In our newsroom, 9 out of 10 people found it uncomfortable handling the product. With this, accidental touches on the side edge or even pressing the power button inadvertently become routine.

Available in four colors, the Galaxy S6 Edge is undoubtedly a handsome device in terms of design. The gold version, for example, looks like a gold bar and is pure ostentation. If you consider this factor a prime differential and you’re willing to give up a bit of usability because of that, this is the perfect device for your pocket.

The hardware configurations of the S6 Edge are exactly the same as the Galaxy S6 . However, interestingly, the device did much better in the benchmark tests, which indicates that a better work of optimization between software and hardware could have been done here. However, in daily use the difference for Galaxy S6 is not significant. The two handsets are the most powerful that have ever gone through the writing of Info Digital and run any application in the Play Store without gagging or locking.

Galaxy S6 EDGE running games

Heavy games, social networking applications, multitasking features with two apps simultaneously open and transition between one app and another: all this has been done in a satisfactory way and we have absolutely no negative points worth mentioning in this question. For those who are worried about possible heating problems, at no time did the temperature rise above 40º, which can be considered normal.

In summary: if you choose the power, both Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are equivalent. And surely neither will let you down.

As with the Galaxy S6 , the 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen on the S6 Edge is a show apart. Undoubtedly, the display is one of the best available in the market and provides images with high contrast and sharp colors. With the lights off, movies and series appear sharper, resulting in beautiful images. In fact, viewing content in a curled-edge display gives a special charm to the images.

However, under sunlight or in very bright environments, the index of reflections on the screen is quite high. This is because it is virtually impossible not to find a point where the curved edges do not reflect some light. The end result does not detract from use, but is quite noticeable.

Galaxy S6 EDGE Screen

The specific features of Edge work more like a trick to impress friends than as an indispensable tool. You can receive notifications, view the time or check the weather forecast without having to activate the main screen. To do this, simply swipe your finger from top to bottom and bottom to top to activate the feature.

In our tests the performance was only reasonable and, at times, lower than the Galaxy S5. In moderate use, the cell phone was able to withstand a normal day of use. Leaving the house in the morning and returning at night, the load remained between 15 and 25{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1}, a regular number but that could be better for a top of the line. Already for more intense use, there is no way not to have a charger always around.

In relation to S6, the result is practically the same. The load capacity of the Edge is 50 mAh more (2,600 mAh), but in use the difference is imperceptible. Finally, it is worth mentioning the system of rapid recharge, which is able to take the device from 0 to 50{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1} load in just 30 minutes.

In this respect, the device is also identical to the Galaxy S6 . Probably you are in front of one of the best headphones ever made available along with a mobile phone in the market. The Samsung headset is rubberized and looks quite anatomical.

The same can not be said of the speaker. It is not stereo and can be considered just reasonable. When the volume is set to maximum, the sound is sharp but slightly distorted and with a few hisses.

Galaxy S6 EDGE Camera

The camera is yet another aspect in which either one chooses a Galaxy S6 or a Galaxy S6 Edge. With 16 megapixels and a f / 1.9 aperture, the Edge camera brings options for manual adjustments of items like ISO, exposure and manual focus. The use, however, is a bit more restricted than the one in the LG G4 and Lumia 930 smartphone software , for example.

The result of all this is among the best we’ve seen on the camera of a smartphone . Clear pictures, with low noise levels and with adequate color balance. Viewing the images on the Super AMOLED screen also enhances the final quality, but even when we pass the photos to the PC the result can still be considered above average.

The front camera, with 5 megapixels of resolution, also supports the HDR mode, which ensures images with better definition.

In visual terms, the TouchWiz interface is pretty much the same as you’ve been accustomed to seeing for at least a couple of years. However fortunately, this time the software modifications made by Samsungseem to have had an effect and it is lighter and consuming less RAM. This does not mean that it has reached an ideal point, but the evolution of a year is clear.

The number of embedded software, excluding Android’s standard services, dropped to 15, but it’s still high. Among them is good news, such as a suite of Microsoft applications that includes Skype, OneDrive and OneNote apps. Another possibility that should please the Brazilian consumer in full is the theme manager. Through the Samsung application store , you can download dozens of free themes and apply on your smartphone .

At least for now, the use of the features of the side display is limited. However, the look is beautiful and in many instances the Edge functions leave the main screen more free for the user. This is still far from being a fundamental item in mobile phones , but it is something that has the potential to be exploited in the future.

Worth it?

Clearly the Galaxy S6 Edge is much more a phone focused on design than on value for money. Whether you’re looking for performance or a good camera, taking home a Galaxy S6 or an S6 Edge will not make any difference. The only difference will be in your pocket, since the 64GB version of Edge costs $ 4,300.

However, it is undeniable that the Galaxy S6 Edge puts itself on the market as an object of desire. The curved side edges bring good features, but they do not justify the larger investment. However, those who pay R $ 3,300 in the normal S6 may not mind paying a little more to take home a model that draws attention wherever they go.

The Galaxy S6 Edge excels in virtually every aspect. The exceptions are due to the battery life , which could be higher, and the practical usability of the curved screens, since to hold the device is not as comfortable as in the version without them. Whether you are looking for value for money or just a good performance, move away from it. Now, if you want performance and a device that will leave your friends dying of envy and curiosity for design and visuals, open your wallet well and take the Galaxy S6 Edge home.

You ask, and Info Digital responds

1 – How long does it take to charge the device 100{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1}?

This time varies greatly depending on where it is being loaded. However, on average, the device takes 30 minutes to go from 0 to 50{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1}. From this, the recharge becomes a bit slower and the process is completed in approximately 1h30 and 1h40.

2 – When picking up the cell phone , is it common to accidentally touch the side screen?

Yes, it is quite common. However, you can disable these functions. In addition, the enable mode requires you to slide your finger down and up, which makes accidental touches rarer.

3 – Is the Galaxy S6 Edge waterproof?

No. The Galaxy S6 Edge does not have any type of certification like this and therefore should not be submerged in water.

4 – Is there a difference between the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge?

Technically not, since the hardware of both is the same. However, in our tests, we felt that the performance of the S6 Edge is a bit better. The difference is not significant and both are excellent, but if you make the point of having the most in hardware, choose the Galaxy S6 Edge.

5 – Does the curved screen help to secure the device or damage the footprint?

In our opinion, the curved screen harms. It does not look as anatomical as the Galaxy S6 , for example, and you have to take a little more care so it does not slip out of your hands.
