Review: Motorola Google Nexus 6 smartphone

The new generation of the Nexus line bets on screen with bigger size and powerful hardware to conquer the consumer. Is it worth investing your money in it?

Like the HTC Nexus 9 tablet, the launch of the Google smartphone Motorola Nexus 6 also represents a paradigm shift for the company’s product line. Out-of-the-box devices are set for those who are looking for value for money and stand out the robust models, with hardware to fight for the top line of the market.

Regarding Nexus 5, the changes are significant. Virtually everything has increased, from the technical specifications to the size of the screen and, mainly, the price. Incidentally, when it comes to the size of the display, the 5.96-inch Nexus 6 could easily put it in the phablets category, but Google prefers to confront it with smartphones. That being the case, that is how we treat the device.

Available in the United States since November 2014, in Brazil its arrival is still uncertain and may never happen. Motorola, which is responsible for manufacturing the device, does not have any plans to launch the model in domestic stores. However, the cell phone is already a reality for those who have the opportunity to import or travel abroad.

Is it worth investing your money in the newest member of the Nexus family? This is what we will find out now in another Info Digital superanalysis.

Design

When size becomes document

Before we look at the design of the Nexus 6, here’s a warning: we’re talking about a large device, perhaps the largest in the segment that has already gone through the writing of Info Digital. It is larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, than the iPhone 6 Plus and the LG G3. That is, if you felt any discomfort in handling any of these devices, move away from the Nexus 6.

Regardless of the fact that it is uncomfortable for some, it is worth remembering that his proposal is to be a bigger device even. So this is much more a matter of taste than a positive or a negative point. If this feature is not a problem for you, great: you may already consider Nexus 6 in your searches for the purchase of a new smartphone.

For the first time, the manufacture of a Nexus smartphone is under the responsibility of Motorola, a company that was acquired by Google, but has already been passed on to China’s Lenovo. The company bet on a design very similar to that of the Motorola Moto Moto X. Incidentally, in China the Nexus 6 is sold as Motorola Moto X Pro, a proof of similarity between both.

Despite its size, the product can be quite ergonomic. The metal finish on the edges gives a very pleasant sensation when you hold the device. The rear casing of the smartphone is constructed of plastic with a very pronounced curvature, which gives the impression that it is thinner than it really is. The edges at the corners are extremely thin.

Nexus 6

The rear cover is not removable, and as a result, the device does not have a micro SD card slot. The battery can not be accessed either. Also on the back is the Motorola logo and the inscription “Nexus” in relief. On the sides are the power button and the volume controls. The SIM Card slot (nano SIM) is located at the top next to the headphone jack.

Finally, it’s time to clear up another question: is the Nexus 6 waterproof? Several videos available on YouTube show tests performed on the device in which it was submerged or placed under the tap and resisted. However, according to Google, there is no type of certification that indicates this characteristic. That is, he may even resist, but if anything goes wrong, it is at his own risk, and there is no warranty coverage for such incidents.

Hardware

Gross force to fight the best in the market

Nexus 6 models

Screen

With a 5.96-inch display, the Nexus 6 is already among the biggest screens in its class, taking advantage even if compared to some phablet models. The display has a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, and even with the size is not simple, the pixel density reaches 493 ppi – a number that can be considered excellent.

In practice, the technical qualities can also be proven with ease. The brightness and contrast indices are among the best. Just manage the brightness level of the screen to realize the broad spectrum contemplated by the device. This feature also becomes an advantage in sunlight, since at any time of our tests the visibility of the content has been impaired.

The high pixel density also helps the life of those who want to use the device for reading, whether it’s web pages or ebooks (believe me, the Nexus screen is very close to a tablet’s display). The readability of the sources stands out positively. Color nuances in games also go into the list of items we approve on Nexus 6.

Even without the IPS technology, the AMOLED display gives the message. The viewing angle of the screen is wide, and even when viewed from unfavorable angles, there is practically no color distortion or some hindrance that could impair visibility. In terms of protection, the screen of the Nexus 6 features the Gorilla Glass 3, from Corning, considered the most modern in this segment.

Drums

The Nexus 6 has a battery whose capacity is 3,220 mAh, numerically the same capacity of the Galaxy Note 4, for example. In practice, the performance of the model is satisfactory, and in moderate use, it will be common to pick up the device in the morning at full load and reach the end of the night with the battery in the range of 20{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1} to 30{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1}. For most users, there will be no problem in this regard.

Now, if you are one of those who use the cell phone in a more stressful way, know that it will be good to take the charger with you for any emergency. In our tests, it took more than seven hours of continuous video viewing on Netflix to completely drain the battery – figures quite consistent with the average competitor. If it is not a “phenomenon” in this category, at least it fulfills its role very well.

The good news is the Turbo Charger, the device charger included in the package. It really makes a good difference when it comes to recharging the battery. In our tests, it was possible to fill 50{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1} of the load in just 48 minutes, an average of more than 1{890c36218bbc94bcbe8f5d159f212155cbf0c932418a12ec06828c4a996999c1} load per minute. In addition, there are no undesirable side effects in the process, meaning the cell phone does not overheat while charging.

Believe me, the nexus screen has a size very close to that of a tablet

Camera

The rear camera of the Nexus 6 features a 13 megapixel resolution sensor with f / 2.0 aperture. The sensor of the device is the model IMX 214, manufactured by Sony. In practice, the Nexus 6 set is similar to the Motorola Novo Moto X, that is, although it is the guarantee of good images, we can hardly put it among the most accurate cameras available in today’s top-of-the-line smartphones.

Camera app

The optical image stabilization feature is also present, as is the dual-LED auxiliary flash. As a result of all this, you will have access to good quality images in environments with favorable lighting. In night shots, the situation is less pleasant, and the noise level is quite noticeable. It’s nothing to make the camera bad, but we certainly expected more for a top-of-the-line handset.

As for video recording, another aspect deserves to be mentioned: although the image quality is satisfactory, it weighs against the end result the fact that the audio is only recorded in mono – which may disappoint those who expect results with a higher level of professionalism. Finally, the camera software stands out for the good number of features and the easy accessibility to its main functions.

View Profile

Unfortunately the Nexus 6 is not accompanied by headphones. Although this feature can not be considered a negative point, it is curious that a top of the line does not have an accessory like this, however simple it may be. Basically, this forces the user to have some earphone purchased separately or to be satisfied with the audio outputs that the device offers.

The Nexus 6 has two front speakers, located on the top and bottom of the device. Its central positioning is adequate during the handling of the cell phone, since during games it is difficult for the user to cover the audio outputs with his hands. In addition, while viewing movies, series and videos, they also ensure that the viewer is impacted frontally by sound, which can be considered ideal.

In terms of audio quality the device does not leave anything to be desired, but we can not classify it among the best in the category. There is absolutely nothing to disagree with the product at this point, but the volume sounds a little low even when set to maximum. The level of distortion and noise is almost non-existent.

Unfortunately the Nexus 6 is not accompanied by headphones

Software

The best that Android has to offer

Performance

Any application available on the Play Store at launch of the Nexus 6 can run quietly on your smartphone. Its hardware characteristics put it safely among the best models of the present time. Proof of this is the great performance he achieved in our benchmark tests. In virtually every test, the Motorola handset has beaten its competitors, proving that its firepower is among the best.

In practice, our tests have proven all this capability. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, coupled with 3 GB of RAM, makes things a lot easier, and we can say there is no “hard work” for the whole. The optimized software is another item that makes the response time in running any application much faster.

Screen Close

Whether it’s movies or series via Netflix, videos on YouTube or even games, from the lightest to the heaviest, Nexus 6 gives the message to any situation. Real Racing 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, Robocop, Thor: The Dark World and Iron Man e3 are some of the examples of titles that ran on the device without performance being harmed for any reason.

However, it is worth mentioning that when some of these games are running, we realize that the back of the device warms up a bit. However, there is no reason to panic: the maximum temperature reached is within normal parameters and does not in any way impair the performance or handling of the device.

In short, with a Nexus 6 in hand, you are sure that your device will not have trouble running any applications for at least a year. In addition, there is assurance from Google that the software will be updated to the latest available version of Android for the next 18 months.

With Nexus 6 you will have no difficulty running any applications

Benchmarks

To perform this analysis, we submitted the LG Nexus 6 to five benchmark applications. They are: 3D Mark (Ice Storm Unlimited), AnTuTu Benchmark 5, Basemark X, GFX Bench (T-Rex HD Off Screen and T-Rex HD On Screen) and Vellamo Mobile Benchmark (HTML 5 and Metal).

Interface

Officially the Nexus 6 is the first device to receive Android 5.0, version known as Lollipop. The model has the so-called “pure Android”, that is, without any customization by the manufacturer. This, in fact, has always been one of the biggest differentials of the Nexus line since the launch of the first model in 2010, which served as the flagship for the presentation to the world of Android 2.1. We will not go into detail here about the operating system, but if you want to know more about it, it is worth checking our article “Analysis: Android 5.0 Lollipop” .

The novelties brought by the so-called “material design” are present in every detail. Notifications are now already displayed on the lock screen and serve as a shortcut so you can access it directly. In total, the device has about 30 pre-installed apps, basically all Google services available in the mobile version. The main ones are grouped in the home screen in folders according to the theme in question.

Android 5.0 Interface

Integration with Google Now is also present: just slide your fingers to the right to reveal the screen with quick access to links and services based on your user profile. If in terms of functionality there is something new so significant in terms of usability it can be said that Android has never been as beautiful and functional as it is now. There is no delay or blocking in the transition between screens or in the use of more than one app.

In fact, with the exception of the Motorola handset line (specifically the Motorola Moto Maxx and Motorola Novo Moto X models), which have very “clean” versions of Android, no other smartphone with the customized Lollipop version can achieve such fluid performance And that of “pure Android”, a triumph that makes the Nexus line continue having a great differential in this question.

Worth it?

In terms of hardware, there is not much to discuss: the Nexus 6 is certainly one of the best handsets available on the market today. However, just as we are absolutely certain that his performance will not leave any consumer at hand, we can not fail to mention the fact that it has a screen of 5.96 inches, which makes it one of the largest smartphones Available.

If you do not like large handsets, avoiding the Nexus 6 is the best way. Even people accustomed to larger screens may at first glimpse a smartphone as wide as this, but its curvature somewhat softens that feeling. However, it is worth remembering that this is a feature of the device, not a negative or positive point.

Nexus 6 with the box

If this is not a problem for you, do not doubt his potential: the Snapdragon 805 processor coupled with 3 GB of RAM gives the message very naturally. Believe, with a Nexus 6 in hand you will not worry about performance for at least a year, doing this a modest prediction. Pure Android 5.0 is indeed a great triumph, and it is notorious for its above-average performance.

Unfortunately, for the Brazilian consumer, there is still no forecast to launch the Nexus 6 here – which does not mean that this will never happen. At the moment, the alternative is to buy it directly in the United States, where the simplest model costs $ 699 (the equivalent of $ 1,800, without taxes). Via import, the final value of the product is close to R $ 3 thousand, which ends up making it practically unfeasible when compared to what exists in the Brazilian market today.

In this way, the Nexus 6 marks the beginning of a new era for Nexus line devices. The fight now is no longer to deliver the device more cost-effective, but the one that shows more power and better performance. Under this new proposal, the Nexus 6 does better than expected: it is, in fact, the device that delivers the best final set among all Android models already tested by Info Digital.

You ask, and Info Digital responds

1 – When will the Nexus 6 arrive in Brazil?

Officially there is no prediction of when the device will be launched here. Motorola does not confirm whether or not it will launch. So, at least for now, the only way to buy the product is abroad.

2 – Is the Nexus 6 waterproof?

Officially the Nexus 6 is not waterproof or dustproof, as it does not have any type certification. On the internet, there are several videos that show that eventually it can even resist when washed under a faucet or submerged in a sink. However, the warranty does not cover any damages caused on account of this. Therefore, if you want to wet the device, you are at your own risk to take on any problems.

3 – Is it worth changing the Nexus 5 for Nexus 6?

In terms of hardware, the answer is yes. The Nexus 6 is considerably superior to its predecessor, and because of that, the exchange is justified. What you should take into consideration is the screen size, since the display of the Nexus 6 is much larger than the Nexus 5. If you do not mind large screen devices, it is certainly worth your investment.

4 – Can the size of the Nexus 6 get in the way?

If you’re not accustomed to big-screen devices with at least 5.5 inches, you’ll surely be surprised at the handling of a 5.96-inch screen phone. It is the largest device in the category and at times it is uncomfortable to handle it with just one hand. However, this is a characteristic of the product, and adaptation is much more a matter of custom and personal taste of the user.

5 – Does Nexus 6 have problems in which the carcass begins to detach from the body?

Although we have seen reports of problems like this in several forums and Motorola has admitted that in some devices this has indeed been happening, in our model we do not perceive this type of anomaly. We have been in use for more than 30 days, and at least for now, this has not happened.

6 – How to import the device legally to Brazil?

It is difficult to find the product in North American online stores that deliver in Brazil. The simplest solution is to go abroad to buy the device or ask someone to go to the United States. In the list of reliable stores researched by Info Digital, we did not find any options worthy of mention.

7 – Because the screen is AMOLED, it has a yellowish color where it should be white?

In everyday use we do not perceive this problem. However, when you look at the device sideways, you may notice some nuances of yellow in white. But rest assured: it’s nothing that will compromise the usability of the device.

8 – Has Google changed the focus of the Nexus line with the launch of Nexus 6?

Yes definitely. The proposal of the Nexus line until then was to put on the market “good and cheap” appliances, that is, that they presented the best possible cost-benefit ratio. Starting with the Nexus 6, the proposal is to hit the top line of the market, which means to include the best possible hardware in the product, even if the final price is among the most expensive.
